Frequently Asked Questions About the Validity of the Church of the Genuine Orthodox Christians of Greece, Otherwise Known as the Greek Old Calendarists
Demetrios Alibertis
The purpose of this book is to bring awareness to those both within and outside the Greek Orthodox Church, about a group commonly referred to as the Old Calendarists. The Old Calendarists are a group of Orthodox Christians who separated from the State Church of Greece in 1924, when the Gregorian Calendar (under the falsely labelled New Revised Julian Calendar) was abruptly introduced into the Church. The Old Calendarists refused to accept the innovation seeing it both as a drastic departure from the way of the Fathers and also as the means through which modernism would enter the Church of Christ. From the beginning, this group which had as its goal the return of the State Church of Greece to the patristic calendar, endured horrific persecutions. At the command of the chief primates of the Church of Greece, all-night vigils were dissolved by the State Police and the Greek Army, clergy and laity were beaten savagely and killed, and Churches which refused to adopt the New Calendar were sealed with court orders. Despite the bloody and martyric history of the Old Calendarists, most individuals within World Orthodoxy are not aware of their history or the actual circumstances surrounding them. The ignorance of most on the matter is the direct result of the previous generations of clergy simply casting them off as “schismatics” but without explaining to them the relevant matters.
This book is arranged in a Question-and-Answer format and addresses the top 12 questions generally asked about the Old Calendar Church. The purpose of this book is not to point out who is right or who is wrong, but rather to bring facts to the forefront in the hopes that healing and reconciliation can take place between the two branches of the Greek Church. In today’s world, when various countries are making efforts to acknowledge the mistakes of their past (i.e. persecution of Indigenous Peoples; Slavery; Genocides; etc.) it is a shame that both the State of Greece and the State Church of Greece have made no efforts to acknowledge their brutal persecution of innocent Christians (clergy and laity) who were maltreated over their choice to follow the calendar which the Church had always used. As such, one of the aims of the book is to expose hypocrisy, not for the sake of hatred, but for the sake of that truth which sets people free (John 8:32).
